Saroyan wrote elsewhere that, for serveral years, he began each morning listening to Grieg’s piano concerto, and our concert continues as the captivating young Russian pianist, Alexander Korsantia, brings this exuberant concerto to life. The program is balanced by Haydn’s "London” symphony, probably the greatest symphony he ever wrote, and concludes with Sibelius’ Finlandia, of which Saroyan wrote, “it seemed to say something to me that was less nationalistic than private—it was music in fact that seemed to be about me and my particular quarrel with the world.” |

In his works on paper, Saroyan provides a quintessential pure embodiment of his artistic procedure. Influenced by Chinese brush painting, the calligraphic works of Mark Tobey, and the expressionist daring of Jackson Pollack, Saroyan's abstractions combine his powerful sense of form with a willingness to let the moment unfold in its own meaning, much as in his best writing. Each of his watercolors and drawings give us a portrait of the artist in motion while continually discovering and rediscovering that state of equipose, balance, and certainty that gives his work its life."
